Window condensation usually occurs when the temperature outside is colder than inside. It can happen on any type of window, not just the ones with a problem. Window condensation can be a sign of a leaky window, so it’s important to have your windows inspected once it starts to warm up so leaks can be fixed before they lead to more expensive problems in your home.

Windows have two jobs: letting in light and maintaining indoor temperatures. In winter, if you live in an area that has cold winters and use natural gas or heating oil for home heating, you may see your windows frosting up from time to time during these months.

Why Does Window Condensation Occur?

Window condensation is a common occurrence in the winter months, especially if a home has been closed up for too long.

The condensation is caused by the difference in temperature on either side of the glass. When hot air from inside warms up the glass, it becomes foggy or frosted. In turn, that cold air outside cools down and evaporates some of the moisture from the inside, which then collects on the windowpane as condensation.

There are two types of window condensation: interior and exterior. Interior window condensation happens when there is too much humidity inside a house and exterior window condensation happens when there is a difference between indoors and outdoors temperatures.

How to Prevent Window Condensation from Happening Again?

Window condensation is a problem that many people encounter during the winter. It’s important to take care of it as soon as you notice it; otherwise, you may experience serious damage to your home.

Moisture in the house, like condensation on windows, can cause health problems to both humans and pets. The following will provide you with various tips on how to prevent window condensation from happening again.

Window Condensation Prevention Tips

  1. Check for drafts- Drafts are one of the leading causes of moisture buildup inside the house. Close doors and windows that may be letting in drafts (ex: laundry room door, pet doors).
  2. Caulk around windows- Use caulk or sealant around window frames to stop air leaks.
  3. Install weather stripping- Weatherstripping is another way to prevent air leaks around doors and windows where they meet frame pieces.
  4. Seal exterior cracks- Exterior cracks allow water vapor to come in contact with your attic.
